Mesothelioma Survivor

You patiently listen as the man sitting next to you on the airplane tells you his life story. It barely registers as he tells you proudly that he is a “Mesothelioma Survivor” then pauses. You politely ask, “What is a "Mesothelioma Survivor?” This is obviously the opening he was asking for because he goes in to a long explanation of the causes, diagnosis and treatment of mesothelioma. You find out that mesothelioma is a type of cancer  that impacts something called a mesothelium. You also find that this cancer is often linked to exposure to asbestos.  You think, about that remodel you were in the middle of and decide right then and there to wear a dust mask. It is interesting to hear the stories of a “mesothelioma survivor” …

Mesothelioma may be identified by coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, weight loss, abdominal swelling, bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities and other swelling related symptoms. The same bronchial symptoms can be caused by othe conditions such as colds and flu’s. The other symptoms can also be caused by non life threatening conditions so don’t freak out.  Have a competent health care professional check you out if you have any worries.

When a doctor is trying to diagnose mesothelioma, he first checks to see if the patient had a history of working with asbestos. Then he performs x-rays of the chest. If the x-ray shows any thickening of the membranes in the lungs, he will likely perform an MRI and take a sample of the fluid in the lungs to see if there are any cancerous cells. Finally, if the doctor thinks there is a likelihood of mesothelioma, he will take a biopsy and test the extracted tissue.

As I listened to my new friend on the airplane, I began to have a new appreciation for the dangers of asbestos, but I also had a new hope because my friend was a healthy sixty five year old. In addition to the standard medicinal therapies which traditionally have poor results, there are also many non-traditional therapies which can be tried.
